LiteOn SOHW-832S, DUAL LAYER

Hello all,

Wondering if anyone knows if the LiteOn SOHW-832S dual layer burner is any good for backing-up PS2 games. I was planning on getting a Pioneer A07, but ended up with this LiteOn instead.

If the LiteOn is good, what program sould I use.

I have a version 5 PS2 (DUO). I plan to use RITEK media.

My apologies if I've rehashed an old topic. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Should be fine if your using DVD-R. Not sure if the Dual layered games are gonna work too well. But that shouldnt be because of your burner.

ye its a good burner but liteons can be pickey about cheap dvd-r media, and some people say the liteons dvd-r burns are not as good as other dvd burners but i cant tell the diffrence when comparing burns with kprobe

you could have goten a Pioneer A08 16X dvd-+r and 4x DL burn they are about same price as the liteon 832s

If you are using this particular drive, my advise is to stay clear of Ritek DVD-R.
chances of it being able to burn is practially 50%. I owned this drive and it practically sucks on the -R media.

I highly recommended getting Ritek DVD+R (also called Ritek Excellent DVD+R) if you are looking for a cheap & excellent dvd recordable media. Although some might argue that -R works better on the PS2, however from my experience using a booktype utility provided by liteon to change the booktype of the +R media to a dvd-rom acutally tricks the PS2 to think that it's reading a DVD-ROM instead of a DVD+R media. (which improves compatiblity)

As you are owning an older version of the ps2, I've really no idea if it will work for you, do consider buying a piece or 2 of the Ritek +R media and try it out. If it works then you can be rest assured that the burn quality of the disc is extremely high (based on Kprobe and nero quality check util).

As for which software to burn, you can always burn using Nero (since it came with the drive) if it doesn't work, use other software like record now or alcohol, however you'll need to purchase them. Another suggestion is to get DVD Decryptor which is free.

Nope - can't agree jackng. I use Ritek G04 media in my 832S all the time and I've had nothing but perfect backups using the VS0A Firmware

Well lufcfan, looks like you did have a good batch of the Ritek G04 media, I bought mine from ebay (4x Ritek Printable) and they sucks.

Lots of people has complain of the quality of Ritek Media varies too much, so it's really a matter of luck when it comes to Ritek media (not particularly only at G04). You might like to head over Here to read about the media for Liteon

Lucky you mate...where did u get them?? I've so far burned abt 400+ disc, and 100 of them where the ritek printable that only works well with my pioneer. I kind of gave up the -r disc now, since the +r disc are the same price. Oh do try the Ritek Excellent Disc that I mention about, you'll be very surprise to see it burn very well at 8x despite being a 4x disc

Or at least a better variation of the Lite-On burner. Just like ps2's not all ps2's are the same quality. Even within the same models.

eBuyer, local Halifax market, Manchester Computer fair (various stalls), Huddersfield Show, Manchester Show (Various Stalls), svp.co.uk

I think it's more than coincidence that I have had ALL working discs from all these places, don't you?

I got a old liteon, its a LDW-411s and it burns perfect on ritek and just about every media i have tried so far. In fact my next burner will be the 832S over the A07. Nothing against Pioneer, i got a A05, i just like the Liteon burner better. To me the 411S seems to out perform the A05

Guess i am just lucky like lufcfan . I dont know about Gamefreax but the people at www.cdrlabs.com give the liteon burners a excellent review. BTW, i see in your signature you got a liteon 832s, If liteon burners are crap and the 411s you had was so crappy then WHY did you buy another one
