Call of Duty4: Modern Warfare

I get this message,

The game crashes at launch with "DirectX(R) encountered an unrecoverable error"

I have tried the original and the crack and I get this :\

I have formatted my pc and its the same problem!

I have
WindowsXP Home
AMD Athlon 2600
1536mb Ram
DirectX 9.0c (latest from site)
ATI Radeon X1650 Series 512mb AGP

When I run dxdiag and I goto Direct3D Acceleration test it says it failed to create the 3d device (generic failure) Ive been googling and notice COD2 has had this problem too! I've tried putting the performance of my soundcard and acceleration down to basic, still nothing!

Im really stuck and I bought this game and I cant play it :\

Update to latest graphic drivers, latests DirectX, latest sound drivers, latest chipset drivers - update everything. The drivers you get with your components may very well be outdated.

Hi,

I have tried all of this...

I have latest ATI drivers (even same problem with the disc i got, and i tried an earlier version!) updated directx to the latest on XP! ran all my updates and same... also I have updated my chipset drivers, my sound card drivers (i have 2 soundcards and same issue!) I have formatted my pc to XP home again...

Everything I have on my computer is legal and I am still having this problem What other stuff could I try?

hmm possibly
1. check agp apeture size in the bios - if its wrong, set it to default
2. check you have the right agp driver installed for your motherboard
3. check settings for videocard, i haven't got an ati, but i presume its in the control panel somewhere
4. try running the test in safe mode.. same happens?

I have checked the BIOS, its set to 8x AGP...

Also I have installed the A7V600-X Chipset Drivers with the AGP...

It still opens with a black screen then crashes with that DX error, I have had other games work before that require directx?! what else can I do?

My friend is getting the same error. All drivers updated. We are still tryin to figure out what is causing that error.
We suspect it could be the onboard sound chip, cuz there are no up-to date drivers for it.
Or it could be just another game bug because I see more and more ppl gettin it.

I read on their site with an update to the problem asking people to lower the performance in the audio and sound devices in control panel, but ive done this and nothing!! I have an onboard soundcard, with 2 additional soundcards (a 5.1 which I recently installed) and i've tried numerous things.

I have literally updated everything, rolled back stuff, and formatted! im just giving up on this and a £30 with disappointment until they release a patch or a fix for this.

TippeX was meaning the Aperature Size in the Bios.

If you have 512mb (ram) or less,

set the Size to 64mb.

from 512-1024

set to 128mb,

Above 1GB ram set to 256mb.
