Dual layer original games will not load.
I have a playstation 2 model number SCPH - 30003 R
It was the machine that came in the Metal Gear Solid 2 pack. I have had no serious problems with this machine since i got it a few years ago and i had the messiah chip installed way back then and it has worked so far. It has always loaded original games and films with no problem and also booted back-ups. But recently i noticed that a dual layer dvd game - God of War - would not boot at all. (Original copy of game not back-up) I am wondering is this problem linked to my machines board or laser etc... or possibly that the messiah chip is stopping the dual layer original copy from loading because when the chip came out there was no dual layer games? Im not 100 percent sure. I was thinking it must be the machine itself. Has anyone had problems with their machine booting original copys of dual layer games? Also does anyone remember what version this board is? I have not really been reading up on playstation mods and back-ups for a while because everything was working until this dual layer game would not load. Thanks for any info. |

Try using the Toxic DL patcher. You can find it at www.ps2hd.com

I was reading about that patcher before. Up to this moment i have not actually made a dual layer back-up , but had success with single layer.
I was surprised when the game i mentioned did not load considering it was the original pressed copy. I remember reading on here that some playstations may have problems reading a dual layer game wether it is a back up or not. Surely this is more common on older machines? To get back to what you mentioned about the patcher, are you basically saying that if i made a patched back up of that game that the playstation would have a better chance of loading it than the original pressed copy itself? |

It could indeed = and therefore could mean it could affect your machine.
If you have a 30003R, you MAY have a V4R - and V4 don't read Dual-Layer media as they are in the + format. I'd try the patcher first though before jumping to these conclusions

You can rip this game with "sonix god of war tool" to dvd5, so you have better chance for running that game on your old ps2.

When you say this machine may not be able to read the dual layer games that are backed up in the + format , are there any - dual layer media available at this time ? I havent noticed any just wondered are they on the way?
The fact that the machine will not boot the original pressed copy of the game , would that not indicate that my PS2 simply can not read any dual layer media wether it be original or backed up? I read some information in this forum under a sticky which gave info about laser and media issues . The following is from that post >>> DVD9 games conform to Sony's special protection check which is a complex algorithm based on a sequence stored in a data wobble deliberately pressed into the groove at the start of the disk. This deliberate aberration has to be focussed and read in via the laser and this is where, I believe, the PS2 laser has difficulty at such low reflectivity. I was just wondering could this be the problem and if i tried a patched backup instead of original disc maybe it would load as that information is left out of the copy? Forgive me if i am mistaken about what info is actually left out of a copied disc , i have not been reading up on this for a while. Im just trying to work out if my PS2 simply will not read dual layer at all. Its a shame if it doesnt read the original dual layer games , because thats what it was suppose to do! lol. |

dvd9s bite
My origanal PS2 (version1) does not read God of War because it is a dvd 9. That sucks.... I am going to try and rip it onto a dvd 4.7. Is there no DVD 9s on DVD R-? Could you also recomend good brands of CDs and DVDs? My burner doesnt do the cheap green tinted discs. But higher priced disc always works. I get great results with sonys($1.oo a disc), but I have to sell a kidney7 to afford some...

You said you have the original? Before you do anything disable the chip and try to boot the original of GOW. This will determine if its the laser or the chip. To do this with the messiah2 you simply hold the rest button in until you see the 'Sony Entertainment' screen.

i noticed recently that verbatim have started making DVD-R dual layer discs , i have not tried any dual layer so far but maybe these would have a better chance of working , you may need to also patch the ISO with the toxic patcher before you burn the image back to disc , apparently you need to do this with the DVD+R dual layer. I mostly use Verbatim CD-R and at the moment DVD-R discs with the ritek dye, they have worked well so far. spedmetal My chip was the first messiah does this rule apply to it also? When you say hold the reset button to de-active the chip i assume you mean that a clean reset then start up the console and simply load the disc? On the first messiah chip you have to press reset once even if the game is original or copied. If you just insert the disc none will load at all , they all require 1 reset , and the films require 2 resets. I would imagine the only way to totally de activate the chip would be to remove it. But i have a feeling that its the console itself and it cant load dual layer because why would the chip not load dual layer when it can load anything else? |
