Well, a new xbox is about $170 with games included and 2 controllers. A crappy thompson drive is sold for about $70. So, if it were up to me, $100 wouldn't even be worth it, since that is about the price of a new xbox after you replace the drive.

Hopefully he already has his Hard Drive loaded with games ... And he won't "need" the DVD Drive any time soon. I would check eBay for some used drives. I saw some go for cheap (Tompson drives) but the better drives go for MUCH more.

Ya I would tell him to keep the XBox and buy a new drive.

The other thing to think about is are you 'sure' it is a bad DVD drive?
A broken trace or issues with the mod chip can make it look like the DVD drive has gone bad. The only real way to test that would be to slap in a known working drive and find out. IMHO the cheepest way to fix a broken xbox is to take another for parts (and hope you don't end up with two with the same broken stuff). As far as what to offer your buddy - I would suggest $50-$60 assuming he wants to keep his mod chip. |
