Confusion about playing backup games..

Please excuse my ignorance, as I have never owned a console machine besides my NES.

I recently got a PSX, and want to play "backup games". However, I'm confused about the situation at hand. Do I REQUIRE a mod chip? Or are these patches on gamecopyworld for patching the backup game (before I burn obviously) and then they (the backup) will be able to be played without a swap or mod chip?

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

No matter what, you will need a modchip.
