PS2 with Magic 3 won't play DVD-R movie

UPDATE 10 April 2003 Yes it will if I do it right !! :-)

PS2 V5/6 fitted with Magic 3. PS2 will play all original games and DVD movies. Will play all my backed-up PS1 and PS2 games but will NOT play any backed up movies.

***NOTE*** PS2 would not play DVD-R movie back-ups before mod either.

Console SCPH3003R
Browser 1.20
CD Player 1.20
Playstation Driver 1.10
DVD Player 2.10E

The DVD-R blanks that I use are either cheapo generation 3 or Datasafe White generation 3 (Ritek dye same as Traxdata). All the DVD game back-up's play fine but I just can't get a movie back-up to play.

I have ripped with Smartripper, stripped to the movie only with IFOEdit removing region and macrovision and burnt with Nero V5.5.7.2 OEM. I have even used Prassi V2 using the global image method with a small DVD and kept everything and that would not play either.

All the copy's play on stand alone DVD players with no problem but the PS2 will not play them.

I have tried all the boot methods.... Put the DVD-R in the tray and close it, Power down, Power on then press the reset button until the blue LED comes on then release.... result is either a request to insert a PS2 disc or a black screen.

I cant afford to let the kids use the originals as they will not put them back into their cases after use they like most kids just leve them laying around to get scratche up.

What is the problem do I have a faulty Magic 3 or have I got a wire with a dry joint. I presume the DVD-R's are ok as all the games play so the laser can read them. The DVD movies are PAL region 2.

On the movies that you have that will not play, put one in your PC and see how many folders (not files) are on it......
You probably have a VIDEO_TS folder and that may be it... If that is the only folder, that is your problem....
Create a AUDIO_TS folder (make sure its in all caps) and leave it empty..... When you burn your discs using Primo, instead of just burning the VIDEO_TS folder also add the empty AUDIO_TS folder... This should sort out your problem....
Let me know, if you have any problems....

You are correct VIDEO_TS is the only folder. I will burn a new disc and add an empty AUDIO_TS folder and post back tomorrow evening.

Nope still wont play. Bought a PS2 V7 for the kids and that wont play them either. Wish I could find someone in SW England who can back up movies OK to swap discs with to try to find out what the problem is.

Are you familiar with dvdxcopy? Check it out here. It couldn't be any easier.

Had a look at dvdxcopy but it does not support the PAL standard, its OK for you NTS guys. Maybe Derrow will get it working for the PAL users in the future.

Another thing you should try is burning the VIDEO_TS folder and the AUDIO_TS folder to a DVD-R using Primo DVD or RecordNow Max..... I have found that NERO can cause problems when burning dvd movies.

Just go into Primo (or RecordNow) and go to DATA disc. Add your VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folder and burn...
Try it and see if it works.... It works perfectly for me...

All sorted 100% now it was a combination of two things.

1. Bad media, I had bought a 100 tube of media and a LOT of it was bad, onr disc even had data on it. Since I changed media I have not had one failure (since I discovered my mistake in burning see No.2. The supplyer changed the media with no questions and even credited me for all the coasters.

2. I use smartripper to copy the DVD to the PC's HDD then IfoEdit to strip it to movie only. Where I went wrong was that I was not dooing a "Get VTS Sectors" before burning, since I have been dooing that I have not had a single failure.
