does the old pal/ntsc boot disc work or is there a universal pal2ntsc patch?

I'm awaiting the return of my playstation from being chipped, but I've obtained a bunch of pal games....I was wondering if the old pal/ntsc disc from the ps1 will work, or is there a universal patch?
