Newbie questions about ver7 ps2

Sorry about the newbie questions but I just bought my PS2. I have a version 7. I looked around on the forums but alot of things were for previous versions. As I understand it you have to have a mod chip if you want to use non-patched burns, is this right?

If so, what is the best mod-chip for ver7? I'm not that great at soldering, but I could get someone who is if I have to. Also I'd like to use the black media if I can.

What is the best black media to use (CDR and DVD-R)? It is DVD-R and not DVDR+, right?

Thanks for you time and info!

The companies that make black media are usually cheaper brands like memorex. There are no choices for DVD-R color (always deep purple).

I would recommend TDK or Verbatim media for cdr's and APPLE, TDK, or Verbatim for DVD-R.

Yes your best bet for DVD media is DVD-R not always DVD+R.

Tyler!

Black media isn't really recommended although the adverse difference is slight.

The difference is that black absorbs light in a situation where reflctivity and laser power is everything.

If everything's in tip-top condition including the optical clarity of the compound then black media isn't going to be a problem. The cheapest black media should be avoided and will be troublesome in time if not now.

Thanks for the info, how about mod-chips? It would be nice if I didn't have to solder but not sure if those types are available for version 7.

*edit* typo

You have to have a mod chip to play burned games regardless if they are patched or not.....
You can get "no solder mods" but in my opinion they are not worth a damn.....
Get a direct boot "no swap" chip like the Messiah or Magic 2... Is your PS2 a "US, JAP, PAL"?
They are more expensive up front and require professional installation (unless you are extremely good at soldering), BUT are worth EVERY penny....

I have the US version 7. So any of the Messiah or Magic 2 is good and will work with my US version 7? Hmm, not good at soldering so I guess I'll either have to ship it to get installed or find someone local to do it.

Get the Magic 2 for your US V7....
If you are uncomfortable with the soldering part, you can ship your PS2 to Bill @ Freedomlives.com...
