My German copy doesn't have any serial and doesn't require one.

English one does though. As soon as you run first time it asks for it

But had to reinstall game due to a HDD crash, and installed the 1.1 patch afterwards since it was out and it didnt ask for the serial but the game was nearly buggy with NPC's talking and not talking to you when you didnt want them too.
