Newbie? Making backups

OK, I have read as much as I can find, and made a pile of coasters
but haven't been able to figure this out. I used IsoBuster to read in the files; created several *.bin files; tried different settings in Nero; and even tried CloneCD. I booted DC w/ Utopia, that worked. But when I put in my backup, I never get the %number in the lower-left.
When I look at the backup w/ IsoBuster the LBA values match the original. My dummyfile pushes the overall image size to just about 650Mb. What I'm I missing?

I even tried to using Cloney to see if it reported any protection on the CD.

The game is NFL 2K2, and I tried Roasters.

For Nero, I tried ISO Lvl-2, both mode 1 and 2. Joilet yes and no, Relaxed options..... Tried changing the file priority on the files to high and low (putting the dummy file low, and the game files high, and vis-versa).

The unit MFG date is June, 2000.....

You're not trying to copy original Dreamcast game discs, are you???

If so, stop now! You cannot copy original Sega Dreamcast game discs using your CDRW drive. Just give up now.
