Well I would start with the cable since you aren't exactly sure about it and it's an easy fix. Hold up both ends next to each other with the little tabs facing the same direction. They should NOT have the colored wires inside them in the same pattern.
You list some of the stuff you have but left out 2 very important points. What are you plugging into what? What program are you trying to connect with? I have used Realtek cards though I am not familiar with that particular model. It should be fine if it works in Windows.
