Hope he gets it sorted......Because if it is the lens, most lens cleaners will not do the job and you have to open the drive to get it cleaned properly....not a funny thing if are not experienced. But try other things first....

Monty, my friend thanks you very much, it turns out he had 4 bad discs in the middle of his spindle! All seems to be working well now.
