The problem is because your lacking some puffy dice. Get those and try again. If that doesnt work reboot and try 1 last time.

Mercenaries POD is one wonky game.
The game's load time is hell, and drives my PS2's lens crazy trying to read it. The voice acting doesn't sync with the character models, and it freezes every so often. I stopped playing after ten minutes, lest the game sends my PS2 to the intensive care ward. In my case, it's probably just a poorly backed up DVD-R, but I've found that most THX Lucasfilm produced games tend to be problematic (eg. LOTR: ROTK.) Just my two cents.
