Will HD Loader work on old PS2?

I've been thinking about getting the HD loader, but I've been reading some posts regarding certain games (or maybe the loader itself) not working with certain PS2 versions. I bought my PS2 when it first came out, so I have had it for quite some time now. Will the HD loader work with the first American model of the PS2?
