Hi
Just a quick question my friend has got a cable modem broadband setup. He has been using it for awhile and all has been fine. until yesterday when it went wrong and stopped working! Have been round and had a look, all the lights that should be on are on, have switched it off reset it etc and done all the things that the phone techs normally tell you to do but still no joy. Before i phone the tech line and sit in a queue for an hour and also prompt them to look at my account to find out i haen't been charged a penny for their broadband service for the last year or so (although that could be the reason it has gone down but the service lights are on!!) Is there anything else i need to check. the computer is saying limited connectivity and to resolve this try and repair it. Have done this but it is saying it fails to get an ip address. Could you also help me by reminding some of the commands in the command prompt window, the only one i can ever is ipconfig which tells me the ip address but i thought or seem to recall that thre were others. For example how do i ping website to check it is working etc?? Don't know if i have explained myself to well but hopefully i have, any thing i need to add let me know and i'll try and answer sharpish and thanks in advance for any replies

Limited connection can be due to other things
1. Bad NIC driver (or usb if using USB connection which you shouldnt) 2. ISP has a bad connection to your house. 3. ISP has problems at their local server to you. 4. Windows has a virus that is limiting internet access. 5. Windows is corrupt and needs a reinstall 6. IE has funny settings, just set them back to default. |

Connect another, provedly working PC to the router, re-configure it with the proper IP addresses (should be listed in the manual/contract he got from the internet provider) and see if that works. If it works, your friend needs his PC to be properly configured. If it doesn't, the cable connection is faulty, have the internet provider come to his house and check it out (it's their damn job!).

Go to the command prompt....type "ipconfig/release" and press enter...it will release the current ip address...then type "ipconfig/renew" and it will try and renew the ip address...this might fix it....This only works on windows 2000/xp...If you are running a 95/98se machine let me know and I will tell you something else to try!!!

Hello...
If you are getting limited or no connectivity... then check your APIPA... You might have an ip address in the range of 169.254.x.x.... if you do, then the DHCP function of your Cable Modem (Router) is not enabled. Use IPCONFIG /ALL to view your ipaddress and more. If you have a private address range... eg... 192.168.x.x... then DHCP is working. That is assuming you have DHCP enabled, and not using a static IP address.... If you DO have a private ip address.... you can try to interface with your router via web browser... type in the IP address of the router (Cable Modem) into the address bar. If you don't know the IP address... check out the Default Gateway address in that IPCONFIG /ALL command. Assuming that your Router is handing out DHCP information, it should be correct... Need more info...
