Editing/downsampling .str files

these are the background music files in rush and i need a way to edit/downsample them. cooledit 2000 wont work with them so i don't know what will..

linux box 11-03-2001 09:52

DreamcastKev, cab you place a small *.str file on s erver somewhere so i can take a look at it for you. then, i will find a way to downsample it for you.

emulsoin 11-03-2001 11:34

I hate these files, all i ever do is replace large ones with small ones but then the music sux... at least with wavs i can put in my own music for a game... that can be pretty fun

linux box 11-03-2001 11:43

emulsion, can you post one of these files somewhere. it may be similar to a *.dcz file, which is nothing more than a bunch of wavs linked together in one file...

DreamcastKeV 11-03-2001 14:17

no small str files... its like cdda audio size. Cooledit 2000 cant comprehend it. I converted them to wavs and none of them played.

linux box 11-03-2001 14:33

ok, only way i could help is to see a *.str file, so i will rip this game myself to see the files. how long did it take to rip? the only other option would be to find smallest str file and replace all others with it... post how long the rip took, so i know how much time i am looking at...

linux box 11-03-2001 14:51

ok, not sure if this works or not, but within 5 mins. of research, i came onto this:

http://www.speechtech.com/straud2.html

it makes the STR audio files, and gives you chance to decompress str files to wav, then you can downsample and compress back to str files..

good luck, tell me if it works...

DreamcastKeV 11-03-2001 14:51

took all day. its about 950 megs. the smallest .str file is 40 megs so when they are all replaced with it, its like 789 megs (AHH!!!) theres still some kind of protection on the disc though... cant even get it to load. but fitting it is the primary problem

linux box 11-03-2001 15:11

ok, first, try to use the program i sgguested above, it should work to make the files smaller...
if not, try leaving off the str files, although you wouldn't have any sound. secondly, have you ran the hack3.exe program or the hack.exe program? i take it that this game is not cdda, so no need for the dahack and cdda.exe programs...

DreamcastKeV 11-03-2001 15:11

i think that the program is made for editing their staraudio files.. not sure if its the same thing (would be pretty funny if it was). ill give it a shot

DreamcastKeV 11-03-2001 15:13

the first time i tried (with no str) i ran the hack and the hack3. when it got past sega logo, there were just a bunch of wavy white lines and nothing else. so now im trying it without the hack3 (might not require it. its an old game) and will tell ya what happens

linux box 11-03-2001 15:17

yea, not sure if it is the same file type or not, but worth a try..

DreamcastKeV 11-03-2001 15:20

no didn't work.... audio editor I mean. Don't know about the burn w/out hack3

DreamcastKeV 11-03-2001 15:22

replying fast on message boards is wierd.. like irc. /me thinks message boards kinda suck

linux box 11-03-2001 15:26

ok, this is a method i have found works good (although people will say "you can't do it like that!!!") run:

hack.exe BIN_FILE LBA

then run:

hack3.exe BIN_FILE 0

if it need hack3, you will know becuase it will actually chnage something...

also, be SURE to run binhack on ip.bin and so on...

linux box 11-03-2001 15:28

yes, message boards suck...

DreamcastKeV 11-03-2001 15:45

k.. tried with and without hack3 and still get wavy black/white lines... they said in their info it was the first game that actually had real protection.. maybee theres no way for the public to do it.. *shrugs*

DreamcastKeV 12-03-2001 19:43

Someone help me with this! with or without the files i cant get the damn game to boot.

linux box 20-03-2001 20:35

ok, here is what you can do... make a 0 byte file for each *.str file you delete (just create a new file with that name). get it down under the size you need. then run

dahack BIN-FILE 2ND-LBA on all the bin files with the string "CD001" in them...

good luck. if you already got it goin, post how ya did it...

DreamcastKeV 22-03-2001 20:58

Xena said to try and use the 45000 trick and it should work w/ out any bin hacking. still don't know if those .str files are actually music or data though. there were like 2 movies and they are in sfd format and all of the levels and cars are in .lzh model format, so i think thats all there is left to be. Guess i will try that 0 byte thing. When burning soul calibur on a 650 meg cd (needs a 700) it got to the file it couldn't read and it made a loud screeching noise... im hoping that no data will stop this problem but i don't know.. you know how to do the 45000 trick? im guessing it starts burning files at the right sector (45000... duh) so the dc will recognize it as a gd-rom... still not sure on what to do though.
