At the risk of showing my ignorance, whats the difference??

seems the general data is more expensive than the plain?

There are two types of DVD-R media - General and Authoring.

General records/reads at 650nm wavelength
Authoring records at 635nm wavelength.

The latter is used as input to devices that formulate and comlete the pressing of media to make a pressed DVD.

Only the General type is suitable for backups.
