hard drive bay on ps2

Ref the hard drive bay on the ps2, whats it for? apart from obvious answer of a hard drive.

Did sony ever produce one? was it an after thought? Can you connect a drive in there?

The thought of games from a hard drive is good, but surely piracy risk to sony would be greater.

Always wondered and always meant to ask.
