Purple backed DVDs...
Hello!
First of all, I'd like to note that I've had this problem for about 6 months now(since I got the PS2) and already given up on it. This posit is just a desperate plea to whomever might have a fixit solution that I missed. Here we go: My PS2(v7 with an Apple Pro modchip) won't play any Purple Backed DVDs. Both DVD-R and DVD+R, burnt at 1x and burnt at 4x. tested on about 10 different games. Every time there is the same responce - The PS2 is clicking. I assume that the sound is of the lazer hitting the surface of the spinning DVD, moving towards the center looking for data, not finding anything and repeating(all that repeats about one time a second). Solutions I have tried so far : --Burning at slow speeds. --Getting different brands of DVD-R and DVD+R. --Burning different games on the DVDs. --Burning at different speeds. --Burning with different programs, namely Nero and Alcohol 120%. --Claning the lazer lens, both with a lens cleaning DVD, CD and by opening the thing up and cleaning it with some alcohol. --Turning that little white knob that adjusts the lazer height, deep within the PS2 DVD drive(turned it in all possible directions). --Using a more powerful magnet to avoid any skipping(that was used not long ago, and clearly couldn't have been the cause of the problem). --Sticking some tape onto the DVDs to increase friction to avoid skipping I think that's about it. In all of the above cases whenever I put in a DVD with a purple back, the same clicking sound happened, and the game wasn't recognised. Note : Original games(on DVD with a silver back) work perfectly. So do the burned CD-Rs. Note2: Purple backed DVD movies don't work either. Same thing. So, would anyone here have any ideas? Or should I just stat out of purple backed DVDs on my PS2? Any replies(even ones that aren't helpful) would be appreciated! Thanks! |

Oooh so many.. Sony, TKD, Samsung, Toshiba, Fortis,, Sky and Ritek.
There were probably more(I got about 10 different DVD movies with purple back from my friends on different medias, none worked). |

I thought it was quite clear that it was the PS2's fault, and not the discs.
My plea for help wasn't to find media I'd like. It was to find a solution to fix that problem with the PS2. As for trying on other PlayStations, I'm afraid I can't. I'm the only person I know around here with one. Yea. I know. :-/ |

My PS2 recently started to do this on all DVD media but my laser is also dying so it is expected. You say that you've had your PS2 for only 6 months, I assume that it could never read the purple back DVD-Rs even when you first got it. Did you install the chip yourself? If not, then my suggestion would be to contact whomever chipped it and tell him your problem. Sorry if I'm not much help.

Mine did the same thing after 2 years of heavy use. It wouldn't load games and did a lot of clicking when trying. Does it work with the original? |

Do a POTS adjustment before replacing the laser. My laser used to do the same thing, brand new, and I just turned up the laser strength and it worked prefectly, for over a year. Then, it started clicking again, so guess what, I turned up the laser some more, and it's been perfect ever since.
Here's a rather poor, but best I could find, explanation on how to do it. http://www.megagames.com/ps2/ps2_las...ibration.shtml There is more than one way to get to the laser unit, I prefer taking off the top, pressing eject to get the disk tray out of the way, and removing the metal rod guides to get to the laser. Once you get to the back of the laser unit, turn the two screws clockwise, about an eighth of a turn, then give it a test. If it still isn't happening, turn it a little more!

Is there any chance that turning that thing up/down would harm the PS2?
I'm not a rich guy, and I'm still enjoying the games I have. It would really suck if I cranked something too high, and it ended up getting messed up. |
