Can the ps2 play CDRW?

I tried to play a CDRW on my V4 PS2, just some music tracks to see if it would read the CD.
The damn PS2 laser clicked loud a few times, when I took out the CDRW, it scratched a
ring around the surface, about 1/4" from the center edge! Piss me off!! Could it be that
actual laser lens can try to focus so high that it hits the CD??

That was the end of me trying CDRW's on a PS2!!
