I didn't get psx games to work properly, but I found a way to boot ps2 DVD games. ps2 CD games will boot when I turn it on with the cd inserted (from completely off).
for DVD originals, do this:

power on the system, hit reset (to get it out of standby), open cd tray, put DVD on it, wait till the browser menu appears. now hold the reset button till the tray moves in and it turns off. then turn it back on by hitting reset again. they should boot now.
