must i use a dvd writer?

You must use a DVD writer or else tear your hair out trying to rip games onto CD and wondering why your movies clips or backgrounds when downsampled look rough and with sounds taken out and you've missed DVD checks and ... you get onto the Forum who don't want to know because they've been through all this and are buying DVD writers!
