As for the CTD problem, I am looking for a thread over at totalbf2.com that had some good tips about it. Will post it when I find it again. In the meantime see in this thread if you can find anything useful:

In the meantime could we get your PC's specs, version of windows and so on. Also versions of drivers etc?
We should be able to solve this in one way or another.

Edit: here's a faster server for downloading the latest patch (1.2 full install)

Edit2: try reinstalling the game and then apply the patch directly (never even attempt to launch the game!) and see if it works then.
