Such a popular thread, but what are chip prices (on average) and what would you recomend cos all I want to do is let my PAL PS2 play american NTSC games Oh and it's a SCPH-50003 if that helps?

Try a H2O - a new chip from the people behind the ICE code - which powers the reliable, and very cheap, Duo2. Hell - you could even go with a Duo 2 if you wanted

A few things about the exploit.
1) It does not work on V12 and latter consoles (the Slim PSTwo's) 2) Unless you have a friend with a modded PS2 you will need some way of getting the exploit on your memory card in the fist place. So you will need to purchases something like Swap magic with a flip top or one of those slide cards that will brake your tray gears over time, or Codbreaker, Action replay I think you can use too, or an official HDL or HDA. None of these discs are what I would call cheap to purchase and in fact might cost about the same as a low end chip installation in the end. So why not just go with the mod chip in the first place. 3) What simplesnake is not telling you about the exploit also is that what you will be doing is installing a homebrew app like uLaunchelf to your memory card and from there booting HDL from your memory card because the exploit does not allow you to boot games from disc. But with HDL you would be able to access games you have installed to your HDD with winhiip and boot them from the HDD. So if you dont already have a Sony network adaptor you will need to purchase one for lets say $20-$30 and then if you dont have a spare HDD sitting around you will need to purchase one and you don't want just a little HDD because PS2 games are large so lets go with at least a 40GB HDD that will run you around $50-$60. 4) To trigger the exploit you need an original PSX disc. They are pretty cheap to find these days so thats not a big deal but just the fact that you have to use a disc to use the exploit is kind of crappy. There is no secret agenda here, a modded PS2 with HDL is a much more powerful combination then the exploit alone. This is why I and others suggest it. With a Dev1 mod chip like the MI or CC there is no complex procedures for getting HDL to boot. With the MI or CC you dont need to worry about patching your ISO's to NTSC or PAL as the chip does it all. Now the "other alternatives" simplesnake is ssshhhing about I'm assuming was in reference to the DMS line of chips. Dont get me wrong the DMS chips when working are great however they are about the most buggy chip on the market with the BSOD issues they have. Now if anyone actually read through all this I will state my suggestion loud and clear. A modded console is hand down a better solution then the exploit. If you happen to have Swap Magic already (or any of the other tools) and a Network adapter then hell your more then half way to being able to use the exploit and I say sh*t yeah give it a try. But even you have to admit simplesnake that a modded console is a better solution then the exploit any day.
