It doesn't matter what version your Xbox is as all new modchips are compatible with all Xboxes v1.0-v1.6. The only thing you have to worry about it the bios that you stick on it.
You will need a size T20 and T10 torx screwdrivers to open the Xbox, you'll need them sooner or later. By the date, I'd say you have either a v1.2/v1.3. One of my Xboxes is a 1.4 and it was made in early 2004.
