My Verbatims are of a dark violet color on the writeable side. Many DVDs are really dark on this side but i cannot say this for CDs
They often are light silver/grey but not dark ?! I had some black ones by Samsung they were really good for burning Audio and SafeDisc But not very compatible with my old drive :-P

And if you can see through it easily like the hand test, then its possible your discs arent legit..

There is a lot of fake media out there.
