mini-images of StarForce haven't worked for some time. they added a content check to the protection to make sure all the data is there (same reason Securom MI's don't work), and it has been protected from full images for quite some time also by checking to see if the data is read from the hard drive at the same time while checking the cd/dvd.

they also have a StarForce activation key required to even start the game.

Hey!

I needed to share a few things with anyone who used my Yellow Mod and is interested in editing...

Torpedoes:
Speed + Range values
Can’t find .cfg File!
Possible file(s) : <install>\data\Library\Torpedo*

Weather:
Weather change algorithms
Want smooth calm weather all times
Kill the damn fog
Possible file(s) : <install>\data\Env\*.*

Deck Gun:
Ability to fire even in a tsunami!!
Possible file(s) : <install>\data\cfg\Basic.cfg

Crew:
Too Lazy!
Always getting tired no matter what I do!!
Remove the cursed fatigue factor completely!
Possible file(s) : <install>\data\cfg\Basic.cfg

Note:
While in a patrol, save your game if your crew is about to commit suicide. Go to you save folder (In XP/NT: My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\Careers\<Your Profile>\). Go to your patrol # (- 1) folder (Say you doing patrol #9 so the folder will be 8). Here you’ll see that with each save, you actually create 10 files! One of then would be “crew_config_<!>.cfg”, where <!> is your save name. Open this file in any text editor and change the Fatigue=?? To Fatigue=0 (where a "??" is you current Fatigue value) for every damn human here!!

It would be easy if you use a nice text editor like TextPad or something that would allow you to do a full replace. In the “Find What:” box, type “Fatigue=” (without quotes) and in the “Replace With:” box, type “Fatigue=0 ;” (without quotes). Note a “;” means a comment and game won’t read this value. So after doing such a replace, your fatigue for any person would change from “Fatigue=??” To “Fatigue=0; ??”! So the old value would be commented. Now load this file from the “Saved Careers” screen.

Be careful that you select the proper saved file! Note that the statistics would be wrong (if you are on v1.0)! If you kill ships before saving, the stats would say you sunk 0 ships but once the game is loaded, everything would be fine and the crew would screw… errr… feel fresh again!!

WOOAAAAAHHAA!!!!

Microsoft started Product Activation with Win XP to save from pirates... A total faliure as the first crack camr within 2 hours of windows launch...

What if... next windows have StarForce!!!???

Does not work.

1. I reinstalled the game.

2. Patched to 1.2 (strange, the USA 1.2 patch give an error on a german .txt file, so I installed European DVD patch, and worked. I thought that I had the USA version..).

3. I Did exactly what reads on the .txt file.

4. Nothing. Tried everything. This "backdoor" does not open.

Any idea?

How do you tested this method? Did you used 1.1 and 1.2? What is your version of the game? EU or USA? Did you installed the game from scratch or you already had activated one time the game?

Now there is some progress right there!!

The way your post reflects itself, svdkloes, seems that this backdoor actually works for you!!

However, as it has been tested by almost everyone here, you are the only lucky person!

You call it "A Backdoor to StarForce". I may call it a glitch that you've exploited!

Because if it's a backdoor then I am recommending your name for the next Nobel Prize...

The registry file creates a lot of “HardwareProfile” entries. I am trying to go through them but that may take a lot of time. Seems like you are the only one with the upper edge here.

Also, its only "HKEY_CURRENT_". Is there other trees like "HKEY_LOCAL_" ?

Are you using Daemon or Alcohol? Their version #?

Do you have a writer(s)? How many physical CD/DVD drives?

Did you used SFNightmare and/or StarFu*ked? Did you disable your Drives?

I followed the instructions carefully and I’ve noticed something.

Firstly, no matter I hold Ctrl or not, if there is no MiniImage (Your MiniImage) mounted; there won't be an "Enter new CDKey" dialog. It will always show an "Error, Retry" dialog. I must mount your image and then and only then, holding Ctrl does its trick!

Secondly, I hade tried this on EUR v1.0 (No mod of any sort)

I have the patch file ready at hand but I won't apply to save myself from a re-install

Thanks a lot for your effort and you just might do this thing... Okay, so you just might not but I am still recommending you for that Nobel Prize!


Zillion & BITEME, the last Silent Hunter III thread was closed because people started to talk off-topic. I don't want that to happen again so please no more saying Thanks or complaining about wasting time.

Zillion, no offense but there was an attitude error in you recent post(s). Star Force is giving people nightmares and if someone thinks he/she is close to something... well it’s a hell-lot better then no news at all.

None of us can decide weather something is BS or not. We are all sick and tired of installing and re-installing the game over and over without luck.

Someone cracked v1.0 did he/she not?

The image was a small ~50KB dl and mounting it takes 2 seconds + 10 seconds for reading the read-me file and that’s it! How much time could it have wasted? Now, you must have had patched the game first didn’t you? Bad mistake...

There's something wrong with the procedure described in .txt file.
First of all, the procedure is not well described and leaves some important questions open. Second, the procedure says in step 2: "Run Silent Hunter 3, holding the Ctrl button, the screen will ask you for the CD-Key". When exactly to do this? Before Starforce is installed, or after? Before mounting an image, or after? With pirate DVD in drive or not? Because, this DOES NOT WORK until you mount the image, you can't enter the key unless the image is mounted first, and the step is before the step that says to mount an image... how is it possible?? It is simply impossible to follow the steps as they are. So, this step doesn't work until I mount the image, because the game says to insert the disc and doesn't even ask the key, with CTRL or without it.
So I had to mount the image. I did it with Daemon tools 3.47.
Only AFTER that I could start the game while holding the CTRL button. The Starforce dialog opened asking the key. The key was already there, the one merged into registry earlier. I erased it and entered the one in .txt file. It displays some error message, I exit, and then start the game again. Again, error - saying "Failed locating the product authorization information in the system registry. Verify the Disc Key entered or press the "Information" button to obtain a new Activation Key.".
Then I tried again, but this time I left the key that was merged into registry.
This time error said "Insert the Silent Hunter III PC DVD disc into another drive then press "Retry".".
So, obviously, this procedure doesn't work, at least on my computer...

I believe this system of fooling the Starforce should work, but all procedures that I've found on Internet are not describing it clearly. Can you please clarif y the exact steps so we can retry and hopefully, finally, start the game?
