Yeh the coils were burning out making the laser work overtime! with the diode or pic fix with voltage regulator it works perfectly. I personally havent tried but a few people have told me it works perfectly. You could also use the "muppet" chip which is sposed to do that job for you. but it just looks like some kinda fake.

hmm yeah because no one has ran a test on it. If i do chip a slimline i may try a muppet or on a 9 or 10 depends really.

I've had my PAL PStwo since late October last year and I've since installed a Matrix Infinity with the Neofix Xii and it's still going strong.
If you are worried about your laser dying after voiding your warranty, you could run it for a few days solid with a scratched up DVD-R movie disc on repeat. Or play through San Andreas, that game gives the laser a real work out. Also try a few CD based games as well. If it's still ok after all that, you should be right, but as always, there are no guarantees.
