You don't make an image of the cd drive, you make an image (iso) of the actual cd. Hard-drive space shouldn't really be an issue since music cds are tiny compared to PS2 games (Which I backup often)
RecordNow Max, is an excellent program to burn your music cds. I doubt the entire idea of using your PS2 as a secondary drive for your PC is going to work out.
