Sony in Japan has announced a new PS2 that features all the benefits of a high-end DVD player.
The new model, the catchily titled PS2 SCPH-50000, can now read DVD-R and DVD-RW discs and, even more impressively, it features progressive scan to give the best possible picture for serious Flat-Screen plasma TVs and HDTV.

As this latest version of the PS2 is targeting the home cinema user, it even comes with an all-new DVD remote control. The machine is also slightly lighter and is said to be 30% quieter. The trade-off is that the i-Link socket - allowing multiple consoles to be networked for games of Gran Turismo 3 and TimeSplitters 2, for example, has been lost.

This aside, it looks exactly the same as previous PS2 models. The latest PS2 goes on sale in Japan on May 15. As for a European release, we can't possibly comment, but we guess it's 'don't hold your breath'. But we're holding...
