1. You don't need subchannel capability for safedisc 1 or 2. The mechanism does not use it. securom1 and 2, libcrypt (PSX) use it though.

BUT, if you are splashing out on a new burner, then an all singing, all dancing model would be preferable.

As for running backups, until you get your new burner, I'd use Daemon tools. Make a clonecd image, then mount it with daemon tools and it'll run just like the original. No coasters. Downside is of course 600+Mb on your HD.
