I don't suspect the install because it works with DVD-Rs.
The key point lies in the difference between your PS2 and your son'e PS2, where the CD-Rs work. So it's likely to be the laser. You can go through the hassle of re-calibrating it and still not being sure of what you are doing or making things work; or you can buy a new laser £49.99 thinkprice or kanection, and whack that in. But have you tried cleaning the lens first with a cleaning CD?
