Old Dog wanting to learn new tricks

I have been backing up my psx cd's for years and know how to copy them and patch them well. I would now like to broaden my horizons and venture into the copying world of PS2.
I hear there are many models of the PS2, how does this affect copying the DVD games? If I use a DVD writer does that mean that the copying process is simialr to the psx one by this I mean once it is copied I just put it in my chipped PS2 and it works? DO different models require different ways of getting the DVD games to work?

It would be much appreciated if you could help me out.
