Another old modchip: Star Chip on V4 - uses?

I recently got an old 30001 R (V4) which is labelled as having a "Star" mod applied in late 2001. As far as I've found this is the only source for information on its use.

Having said that am I to understand you need to use a GameShark 2 modifier disc to run backed up/import software via swapping?

If anyone else has experience using this chip, let me know and thanks.
