Backing up PS2 games

I'm new at this and was wondering if I could get some help. I have a PS2 with A Neo 2.2 modchip. I also have Gameshark version 1.0. I'm using CloneCD to make backups of my games as my CD reader and writer are compatible with this program. The question I have are as follows.
1. Do I need to patch games since I'm using CloneCD?
2. If I have to patch games how do I patch a CloneCd image file? When making a copy it leaves me with three files. X.cdi, X.img, X.sub. What file do I apply the patch to? I know if using CDRWin to apply the patch to the Bin file.
3. What write speed should I use? I heard do not exceed 4X
4. According to a tutorial written by BJohnson, he said if using Gameshark2 version 1.0 games must be patched. Version 1.3 does not require patching. Is this so even when using CloneCD and if so what program should be used to patch these backups?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
