Quite weird... It's as if some game script was damaged. However, those IWD files are actually ZIP archives, if I remember correctly and, also, you say the game works without the patch. There must be something wrong in that patch. Can you install the game on another PC, apply the patch and see if it works there? If it does, there may be some compatibility problem between the patch and your PC... Hmmm...
