Ok, see the main problem is more than likely that your ps2 laser is going out. PS2 lasers are crap. They only last for so long and using PS2's as dvd players only shorten their life.
What is recommended is getting yourself a $45 APEX dvd player and using that strictly for your dvd playing. Tyler!
