mds mdf and md0 for Alcohol 120%??

Hi folks, question about image files produced with Alcohol. I understand extentions .mds are similar to .cue files and .mdf is like .bin, but wot the heck is the .md0 file for???
Seems Alcohol itself doesnt recognise it.

Another question about Alcohol image files...can I open .mdf files without using .mds?? Just like in the case of using the .bin file instead of opening .cue to burn an image?
