You weren't tricked.
There is no version with German speech at all. The version sold in Germany has German (in fact multi-language) text but English speech. Reason: Up to NHL2001 there was a version with German commentary, but most disliked it (because the German commentary was much worse than the English one), so EA decided to use the English one since NHL2002.
