you shouldnt need worrying about soldring, you can use pogo pins but they are tricky to align
as for copying game, it is different from the usually way they are backed up but after a few runs doing it, its very simple
the mod your on about will do the trick, although there are newer one on the market
if it comes with the cromwell bios all it will load is linux i believe, after it is installed you have to flash it again to get back ups runnning
either seems to run, although i believe dvd-r is more compatable
