I attempt a return if it damaged my PC in any way. Sometimes the only thing I will get in return is a non-returnable game (not store credit even) that I have to buy on the spot. and sometimes (especially with PS2 problems) they *cough*GAMESTOP*cough*will offer an exact copy only (returnable for yet another copy of the same game)
