Question DVD MEdia in the movie industry

I tried copying a movie to a dvd-r with my pioneer A04. The burn was successful but when i try to play the movie on my dvd player, it doesnt play anything. My DVD player doesnt even read the DVD. Does anyone know what kind of media does the movie industry use to make DVD movies.
