I've done some looking into this. The problem comes from the Ps2 basically has a ps1 bios built into it, well sort of. Different program loads for ps1 games to run with no dvd support.
This is why you can't use hdadvance, hdloader, or the swap magic discs to play a ps1 game. You could get it to work but I think you'd have to do some serious system.cnf hex editing and buy a Ps2 linux kit.
As with all things over my head I'll just sit back and wait until most of the work is done. I'd rather look for a way to make an hdloader for ps1 personally.
