Is it the first playstation edition or playstation 2?
I have the first edition with 3 8mb cards. The cards i use formated automaticly when i checked it in memory section and changed blocks (hold select button, then push L1 & R1). This might be an solution.
Although, beware of these cards, they can format automaticly sometimes even with saves on it...
