It could be that you have a faulty movie of course i.e one without any audio on it.
One way to find out is to use virtual dub to extract the audio from the film and save it to a filename of your choice.
If it is faulty and has no audio virtual dub will tell you on the other hand if virtual dub finds the audio and saves it to file then you can look at codec's etc.
