Help with finding the name of a childhood game
 

I'm looking for help from fellow gamers to help me remember the name of a game that I used to play as a kid.
All the info I can give are as follows;
1. It was an rpg that took place in a desert-like area, I can remember canyons

2. I seem to recall the game involved firearms as weapons of choice

3. The sprites for the overhead map of the game seemed to have the feel of possibly ff4

4. I don't recall it being 3d models of any sort in the battle screens.

Any help you guys can give will be deeply appreciated

Could be one of the Phantasy Star games.
