Network setup

I Have a thompson speed touch router and its set up so my pc ethernet gives out 100mbps and the wlan wireless gets 54mpbs, When i download and the wlan pc is not online i get a very good download, as soon as the other laptop using the lan network settings the downloads go down drastically. Is there anyway to reduce the wlan wireless 54mbps ? Also im finding the laptop is being left on over night so as soon as i put my main pc on and boot up the
speedtouch , that connection grabs most of the mbps. Is there a way to disable the lap top without deleting the setup or can i just go to the network run configure and take off a couple of digits from the web key and save it to disable the connection, then put the digits back and re-enable it later.Any help thanks

First off, I do not have a clear answer as this problem is not a common one

If your downloads slow down when your laptop connects then this is not normal:
  1. It could be that your router is malfunctioning (or due to a mis-config)
  2. The laptop, for some reason starts uploading (or downloading) something at full speed, thus saturating your upload speed, which will cause downloads to slow down (a mailvirus/worm could be the cause), you can check this with a bandwidth monitor: http://sourceforge.net/projects/freemeter/

I am only aware of one (low-budget) brand router which is able to cap WLAN upload/download speeds, that are the ones from Draytek

What you can do is upgrade the firmware of your router to the latest one, write down your config settings before the update as it will kill your current config.

Yep if your laptop is uploading ((as in some Peer 2 Peer protocal using all your up bandwith)) if used fully uploading, your download bandwith will cut by a hefty amount.

Let me guess your laptop has limewire running, usually a high percentage of people with a laptop with WiFi will use it for a mp3 storage.
