Motehrboard / USB memory Stick

Hi

have just been helping a mate sort his PC out. I noticed that he still had usb1 ports and suggested to him that he bought a usb 2 card, which he did. he installed and it and all went well. He plugged his digital camera in (finepix f455) and picked it up and worked. then he installed his scanner and that went ok with the new ports. he then went to plug a USB (cruzer) 1Gb stick in and it opened it, but when you try to do ANYTHING at all (create folder, transfer files to it) then the computer totally froze. He could not access anything at all, so had to do a reset. We then tried it with my memory stick and it froze which is a jetflash, tried both sticks on my machine and they are fine (both formatted FAT32). Has anyone got any ideas?? Have totally unistalled the card from the system and restored it removed drivers etc and started from scratch but still the same problem with the memory sticks.

His system is WIN XP sp3 all updates installed.
AMD 1700
ASUS Motherboard A7N 266-c Bios Version 1001.e (3/1/2002) (i know the motherboard bios is very outdated but have looked at the asus website and the newest bios is the end of 2003 but none of the updates say they have any relevance to usb2)

Bios Info Here his is revision 1001.e http://support.asus.com/technicaldoc...Language=en-us

The usb 2 card installed is a nec PCI USB2 4 port installed the drivers from the disc as well instead of using MS ones which it said you could do

Card is here http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...tml?NOV-USB4PO

The thing i find strange it allows the camera which it sees really as a mass storage device whcih si the same as the usb sticks. Now the only other thing i can think of is that the camera is powered and the sticks use the usb power so are the sticks getting enough power? but still it shouldn't freeze the system surely?

Any ideas most appreciated

kind regards

Just a few ideas... Isn't the stick switched into read-only mode? Have you tried it with another PC? have you download and installed the latest version of the USB 2.0 driver of the motherboard/chipset?

Chees for the reply

Yeah have both sticks in another pc, both work fine no problems at all, have also got what appears to be the latest drivers, the only thing that bugs me is that everything else works bar the memory sticks!

Any other ideas much apprecaited am really scratching my head

Just unlucky im afraid, just not compatible with some hardware on your mates machines.

But bear in mind USB2 PCI cards wont work at maximum speed or performance.

Take out his pci card, put it in yours and try the USB stick that way if same thing, then possibly the PCI card is incompatible or not 100% working.

or try reverting to the microsoft drivers.. worth a shot...

Just a stupid question but, have you tried the usb pendrive on the pci card with no other usb connections to it? some cards show 4 usb ports but canīt get enough power from the pci port if the usb devices suck quie a bit of it.
