Xbox DVD Drive Replacement

Hey Guys

I just brought a second hand Xbox from a friend, it has problems playing audio cds and stuff...My xbox has a Thomson drive. I've seen replacement Samsung Drives (for the newer versions of Xbox) for sale...
Can I buy one of those drives and plug it straight in do I have to buy the Thomson Drive (which would really suck - according to websites these are the worst drives)

thanks in advance

All XBoxes can use any of the XBox drives just fine. XBox-scene just posted a news snippet about a device that lets you easily convert a PC LG-8164 drive into a XBox compatible one. With future firmware upgrades the LG-8164 drive would be able to read any type of media.

As far as Thompsons are concerned, they are the ones that have cause the most trouble with Dirty Disc Errors and the like, but I find the ones that are good to be real good at reading different DVD brands (Verbatim 16x are the best) and different DVD types (+ and -). Samsungs are supposidly good, but again it's a crap shoot. I've had a few that haven't been able to read both dvd+r's and dvd-r's, which is annoying when you have multiple XBoxes and already have a ton of DVDs burned.

Well I got a Thomson replacement drive from AceGameStore (they were selling it cheap)

now here's my other problem....I just installed my replacement drive and on EvoX the Disc Status will say it's open (but the tray is closed). When I eject and close the tray....EvoX says it's ejecting and nothing else

What to do??

Is the IDE and yellow cable snug? Does it boot originals when the chip is off and the MS dash is loaded? It sounds like you might have gotten a bad drive.

The IDE and yellow cable are snug...it boots original when the disc is in there and the xbox is rebooted.

i'm taking my xbox to the store and get it looked at tomorrow

**UPDATE***

The guys replaced my drive and installed a Phillips drive now...any better??
