dplayerx.dll problem with Age of empires 2

Hi everyone,

I have the AOE2-CD (not an online download) and when I tried to install it today, it just won't run anymore. I just get the error message "error in dplayerx.dll" and then I return to desktop. I used to be able to play the game on the same machine as now (only now it has higher CD-Drive speed) so what has gone wrong? I googled for an hour on various forums but I never came up with a solution that works for me. I thought it was a direct-x error but my machine has 9.1, you need at least 6.1 for AOE2.

Can anybody help me out? I'm really not a specialist in anything that ends with ".dll".

Thanks a lot!

Hey Hey

Hello. Maybe you should contact Microsft or whoever the publisher is.
AND this should be in General Gaming.
Come back if it dussnt work.

dplayerx.dll is a part of the protection used in the game (Safedisc). If you get an error in that it can't be good. Test reinstalling the game or use a crack to see if its works.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for quick answers!

I reinstalled, rebooted etc over a dozen times by now but I keep getting the same mistake with dplayerx.dll. I have no clue what it is. What exactly is a "crack"?

kosmiq 17-02-2006 15:36

a crack is a file that removes the CD-check and protection from the game so that you can play without having the disc in. Very handy for saving your originals from getting scratched.. :)

It could be something as simple as a dirty disc, I'd clean the disc and check that there are no major scratches on it myself.

Hi and thanks for all the help!

here's the last edition on this saga:

- I checked for scratches or dust on the CD: nothing there
- I installed the crack and the game works, but I can't connect to MSN Zone. When I try it says "AOE not found on your HD" while it's installed?
- sometimes I get another mistake when trying to run the game (not the crack): some .icd file gives an error.

Do I format my HD? Or is the solution actually very simple?

Getting an error sometimes on ICD file is not a good sign.

Since your getting it sometimes there may be a problem with either memory or hard disk.

Do you have problems with any other games?

just a side not, i think the latest patch (2.0c ???) eliminates all protection, meaning u should be able to play without your cd, also, AOE not found is a common problem on ZONE, try gamespy arcade, if it still doesnt work (similar error message) then it's a common registry problem that aoe2 has with some and yes a format fixed it for my fiancee but its up to you if its worthed the hastle.
